We Made These

It's hard to be a small business. We don't do the volume and don't get the discounts of a large corporation. We make up for it by giving the customer special attention and going the extra mile. Here at Baked Goods Pottery, we're always trying to find ways to do that.

For instance, lately we've started pouring and building some of our own pieces. They're made by Jim and Nate, here in St. Louis, Missouri. We don't have the manpower or factory equipment to completely stock our store, but it's a start. We are finding new ways to make our store better by making unique products with higher quality than what's made in China and elsewhere overseas.

Let us show you which pieces are "ours." We'll point them out. We're kind of proud of them.

I just finished painting and firing this bird. It's a new shape we got in recently and is fairly large. There are 2 versions: one looking left, and one looking right. I used some crackle glazes on the body and wings to give it an interesting texture. Its coloring is loosely based on an English robin.

This owl...

Painted a quickie owl tonight. This is a new shape we've been pouring in our shop and we needed a sample painted. It's been antiqued underneath, so it's hard to tell what the finished look will be until it's fired. Fingers crossed...

I've been working on a giant dinosaur egg for Easter.  Here it is about 2/3 done.
The back side has some mistakes, but that is what back sides are for. I will post again after it's finished and fired.

Finished Snail

Here's the finished snail. The body is a little dark. I should have done a second layer of orange on the spots to make them brighter. The shell is a little too bright. You can't really see the mother-of-pearl overglaze from the photo.
What do you think?

Snail's Pace

My next project...
I painted the body with underglazes and then painted it with matte clear.  After firing, the surface was rife with crawling and shivering.  Into the bin.

Next I'm going to try stone finish glazes and colored matte glazes - no underglaze.  The shell is bright pink inside and pink stripes on the outside.  I will overglaze it with mother-of pearl when it come out of the first firing.

Well, that's the plan anyway...

Citrus and Berries Workshop

Another workshop for Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 at 10 a.m. We'll be making two projects again. The first is this tangy citrus plate.
It's a large dinner plate 11.75" diameter.  You can vary the design to make it any citrus flavor you like. For advanced painters, we'll also learn how to paint drops of water (not shown on this example.)

The second project will be this sleek bathroom tray. Great for holding your soaps, and product. Or use it as a votive or cheese tray. Very versatile indeed. The design is elegant, but with a faded, aged weathering that gives it some character.

This workshop is called Branching Out.  We'll be making two pieces again...

First we'll make this wood tone frame with a Creative Image branch fired onto it.

Hope to see you at this one.  We'll meet at Baked Goods Pottery on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. The cost is $60 and includes all supplies and materials.  And you'll have two great pieces to add to your collection or to give as gifts.
